Why "just put your phone down" doesn't work
If you've ever told your teenager to put their phone down and gotten an eye roll in response, you're not alone. But here's the thing: that approach doesn't work because it misses what's actually happening.
For teens, their phone isn't just a device — it's their social lifeline. Asking them to put it down feels like asking them to disconnect from their entire social world.
A better approach
Instead of focusing on screen time as a number, try having conversations about how technology makes them feel. Ask questions like:
- What apps make you feel good after using them? Which ones don't?
- Do you ever feel like you can't stop scrolling even when you want to?
- What would you do with an extra hour if you weren't on your phone?
These questions open up real dialogue instead of triggering defensiveness. They also help your teen develop their own awareness about their relationship with technology.
