What Instagram's algorithm actually does to teen self-image

The personalization problem

Instagram's algorithm is designed to show you more of what you engage with. For teenagers, this creates a feedback loop that can significantly impact self-image and mental health.

Internal research from Meta (leaked in 2021 and confirmed by subsequent independent studies) showed that Instagram makes body image issues worse for one in three teen girls. But the mechanism is more subtle than simple exposure to idealized images.

How the loop works

The algorithm notices what you pause on, what you like, and what you come back to. If you spend extra time on fitness content, you see more fitness content. If you compare yourself to certain body types, the algorithm surfaces more of those body types.

Over time, this creates a distorted reality where the content you see increasingly reinforces whatever insecurities drove your initial engagement. It's not intentionally cruel — it's the inevitable result of optimizing for engagement without considering psychological impact.
